3 Ways To Track and Measure the ROI of Your MuleSoft Anypoint Platform

In order to measure and track the effectiveness, and by default the ROI, of a MuleSoft Anypoint platform within an organization, there are three areas AVIO Consulting recommends organizations quantitatively track. Below are three ways to track and measure MuleSoft Anypoint Platform metrics.

1. Delivery Metrics

Many clients engage with AVIO because they are not confident about how consistently their project teams leverage MuleSoft. When determining how effectively development teams are operating, a majority of the metrics to be evaluated are not MuleSoft specific, but rather complementary to Mule.

2. Execution Metrics

API Performance Metrics

After deploying APIs to a production environment, the operations team needs to ensure the APIs are highly performant and respond accordingly. If response rate metrics are not captured and analyzed for each API, it becomes difficult to understand if SLAs are being met and if APIs are performant.

Therefore, it is important to monitor latency for each individual API call. If latency is not measured, it becomes very difficult to understand where in a flow of an API a bottleneck occurs. To understand how efficiently the Anypoint platform is processing API requests, the throughput of the platform needs to be monitored as well. Error and Exception Metrics

The ability of an API to properly handle and reports errors is critical to the success of an API implementation. One of the most important error metrics to track is the error rate. Non 200 status codes should be captured and investigated to determine if the API was poorly written or if there are other issues to be addressed, such as a bot attacking an API to find a exploit. Error logs need to be proactively monitored and addressed, ideally in an automated manner, so that issues can be found, triaged, and resolved quickly.

An additional metric that should be captured is the number of reported issues submitted for an API. The submission of incidents for an API could point to a lack of proper documentation, a misunderstanding of the API capabilities, or the use of an API in a manner not consistent with the requirements. By evaluating the type and number of incidents submitted for an API, an organization can determine if changes are needed to better support the API consumers.

API Usage

Organizations are increasingly adopting API-first design principles and should track the business value of APIs through both direct and indirect value. Some APIs can have a direct impact on revenue, enabling sales via a third party for example, while other APIs have an indirect impact through reduction in cost, ease of use, or improved user experience.

One key metric to understanding how well APIs are decreasing development costs is the number of unique consumers for an API. Increasing unique consumers highlights that an API is providing value to the development community. Similarly, tracking API invocation will highlight APIs that are experiencing an increase in traffic. 3. Observability
