Collaborate 2015 Conference: Solutions for the Finance Department

The Collaborate 2015 conference is almost here and the AVIO team will be there again this year. This is my first Collaborate conference, so I am excited to experience the event as both a speaker and attendee.

What is Collaborate?
Collaborate is a conference for the Oracle Community where Oracle power users and IT decision makers find practical solutions for today and strategies for tomorrow. The conference is user-driven and jointly presented by several Oracle User Groups:
The event is comprehensive (big!). In addition to dozens of networking events and the Exhibitor Showcase, there are over 1,250 sessions and panels to gain information, ideas and network with other practitioners. Why Attend Collaborate?
Being user-driven really helps provide value for the attendee. While vendors like AVIO are valuable to provide broad perspective and experience, hearing from fellow practitioners at lunch, in between sessions and at networking events can help you “figure out” your challenges and come back energized for your next project.
 
For AVIO, this conference speaks to a key audience for our team: business users and application owners. All of our projects involve the integration and partnership with existing platforms, applications and ERP systems to accomplish our client’s goals. With so many changes in the IT and Business landscape (mobile, cloud, digital experience – just to name a few), it is critical to stay abreast of our customer’s needs and challenges.

AVIO Session
I will be speaking at the conference this year on the topic “Use SOA and BPM to Optimize and Automate Your Financial Processes.” Many of our engagements have integrations with or between ERP and other finance systems. SOA Suite (integration) and BPM Suite (process management and human interaction) can play a key role in your organization’s overall integration approach by enabling you to quickly improve existing processes and take advantage of opportunities in your business.
 
Through the presentation, I will be providing a refresher on the concept of Pace Layering. This is a model from Gartner that helps view your systems in one of three “layers”:
  • Systems of Record
  • Systems of Differentiation
  • Systems of Innovation
 
This model provides a way to think about your finance system investments and core processes in a way that will protect your upgrade path and allow you to be more nimble with your system changes. Many finance departments don’t recognize how core processes can contribute to innovation or even differentiation. I will cover this topic in more detail, as well as describing several customer examples in core finance processes like general ledger, accounts payable, capital expenditure approval processes and more!
